Jasper National Park · Short walk

Sunwapta Falls

Sunwapta is a meeting of landscapes as well as water. The smaller hanging Chaba Valley joins the larger Athabasca Valley here, and the river steps into a deep limestone gorge beneath a footbridge.

Planning your visit

Approach the falls through the established visitor area off the Icefields Parkway. Keep the upper viewpoint visit distinct from any longer trail outing: extra distance, footing and return time need their own preparation. Check Parks Canada’s current access information.

Our take

The footbridge and gorge offer a different perspective from Athabasca Falls, making this a worthwhile separate stop rather than a duplicate experience.
